14 October 2021

The Russian side at the G20 summit called on the countries to unite their efforts in order to prevent the crisis in Afghanistan and its undesirable consequences for the region and the world as a whole, Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said at a briefing on Thursday on the margins of the III Eurasian women's forum.

"The Russian side emphasized the importance of forming an inclusive government taking into account the interests of all ethno-political forces in Afghanistan as a key step towards the completion of a peaceful settlement of the situation in this country. It was also noted that a responsible attitude to assistance in post-conflict reconstruction, especially of the Afghan economy, was expected from the states whose 20-year presence ended in the current deplorable state of affairs in Afghanistan. And there was also a call to unite efforts to prevent the crisis in Afghanistan and its unwanted consequences such as growth of terrorism, drug production in the region and in principle in the whole world, a new surge of Afghan refugee flows and also the risks of penetration of terrorist elements under their guise into neighboring countries, primarily into Central Asia," the diplomat said.

She added that the summit participants confirmed the urgency of countering the threats of the spread of terrorism and drug trafficking coming from the territory of Afghanistan.

The emergency summit of the Group of twenty dedicated to the situation in Afghanistan was held on Tuesday in the form of a video conference. The meeting was also attended by representatives of international humanitarian and financial organizations.
