18 March 2021

On March 15, Russian Charge d'Affaires in Libya Dzhamshet Boltaev discussed the return of the Russian embassy in Tripoli with the Prime Minister of the Government of National Unity (GNU) of Libya Abdul Hamid Dabaiba and members of the government, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said at a briefing on Thursday.

"On March 15, Russian Charge d'Affaires in Libya Mr. Boltaev, along with the heads of other foreign diplomatic missions in Tripoli, attended as an invited guest a meeting of the Libyan parliament in the city of Tobruk, where the swearing-in ceremony of members of the Libyan National Unity Government took place. On the margins of this event, the Russian representative held meetings with Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dabaiba, a number of ministers of the new Libyan government," she said.

According to Zakharova, the talks "confirmed the mood of our country and Libya to resume cooperation in various fields." "In this context, the possibility of returning to the Libyan capital Tripoli the Russian embassy, which was evacuated in 2014 for security reasons, was discussed," she added.

On October 2, 2013, the Russian embassy in Tripoli was attacked. The attackers managed to break into the premises of the diplomatic mission and were later driven outside by Libyan army units. None of the Russians were injured in the attack. The Libyan authorities then acknowledged that they could not guarantee the safety of the diplomats, after which a decision was made to evacuate them.
