Russia is deeply concerned over the growing large-scale involvement of mercenaries from the Middle East in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. This was stated by Spokesperson of Foreign Affairs Ministry of the Russian Federation Maria Zakharova at a briefing on Thursday.

“We are deeply concerned over the ongoing hostilities and the growing large-scale involvement of foreign mercenaries from the Middle East in the clashes. The costs to the economies and societies of the conflicting parties have increased markedly”, she said.

“We are certain that there is no alternative to the need for a peaceful resolution of the problem and the resumption of negotiations within the scope of the Co-Chairmanship of the OSCE Minsk group”, the diplomat noted.

Zakharova highlighted that Russia continued to make efforts for speedy de-escalation of the conflict and resumption of the negotiation process.

“We are extremely concerned over the deaths of civilians on both sides in the conflict. From the very beginning we have been trying to achieve a rapid ceasefire and to turn the situation into a political-diplomatic one. <...> We are making every effort to turn the situation into such a political-diplomatic, peaceful course”, the diplomat said.
