Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas plans to convene a meeting of leaders from all Palestinian factions in the Egyptian capital, Cairo, in the near future. The purpose of the meeting is to discuss the deteriorating situation in the West Bank in recent days. Azzam al-Ahmad, a member of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) and the Fatah movement's Central Committee, announced this on Thursday.
"In the coming days, President Mahmoud Abbas will send invitations to the general secretaries of the Palestinian factions to attend an emergency meeting in Cairo," al-Ahmad said, as quoted by the Palestinian Ma'an news agency. He also noted that the leadership of Hamas, which governs the Gaza Strip, has "launched a campaign to prevent the holding of the planned meeting."
Following the recent special operation conducted by Israeli forces in the West Bank city of Jenin, Abbas called on the leaders of Palestinian factions "to gather for an emergency meeting to discuss confronting the dangers faced by Palestinians at the hands of the Israeli authorities."
However, according to reports from Al-Jazeera, representatives of Hamas and another group operating in Gaza, the Islamic Jihad, have not yet responded to the Palestinian president's call.
On Monday night, Israeli forces launched a large-scale operation in Jenin and the nearby refugee camp. According to the latest data from the Palestinian Ministry of health, 13 Palestinians were killed in the clashes, and at least 120 others were wounded, with the condition of at least 20 of them being assessed as critical by medical personnel. In response to the situation, the Palestinian Authority's leadership decided to sever all contacts with Israeli authorities and further reduce coordination efforts in security matters. They also made a decision to immediately approach the UN Security Council to demand the implementation of a resolution on the international protection of the Palestinian people.
