The foreign ministers of the Astana format countries—Russia, Iran, and Turkey—will meet on December 7 in Qatar to discuss the Syrian settlement process. The announcement was made by Maria Zakharova, the official spokesperson of the Russian Foreign Ministry, during a briefing to TASS.
"The meeting is scheduled for tomorrow in Qatar on the sidelines of the conference [the 22nd Doha Forum], where Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov is present," Zakharova confirmed in response to a related query.
Since 2011, Syria has been embroiled in an armed conflict. Negotiations under the Astana format have been ongoing since 2017. The format includes Russia, Iran, and Turkey as guarantor states of the Syrian peace process, alongside representatives of the Syrian government and opposition, the United Nations, and observer nations such as Jordan, Lebanon, and Iraq.
The Doha Forum, an international conference, will take place in Qatar’s capital on December 7-8. Attendees include Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, and Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan. The forum will be opened by Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Emir of Qatar. Participants will discuss a broad range of global issues, including international security, energy transition, and sustainable economic development. Representing Russia at the forum will also be Igor Sechin, the CEO of Rosneft.
