Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer said on Monday that it is important to support the process of negotiations between the Russian and Ukrainian delegations in Istanbul in order to end the conflict in Ukraine.
"It was important to understand that the Russian president still has trust in negotiations in Istanbul. I believe that this process must be supported further," the chancellor told a briefing for Austrian journalists after talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow.
Nehammer was the first head of government from an EU country to hold talks with the Russian leader following the start of the special military operation in Ukraine. Prior to that, the chancellor met with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky in Kiev.
According to him, negotiations in Turkey is the only format at the present in which the Russian and Ukrainian sides maintain a direct dialogue. "This is the only format in which it is possible to achieve progress at the peace talks, but they have stalled," Nehammer stated.
