On November 27, Chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces General Valery Gerasimov and Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff General Charles Brown held a phone conversation to discuss various security issues, including the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The discussion was confirmed by Jeryl Dorsey, an official spokesperson for the Joint Chiefs of Staff, in a statement to ABC News.
"At the request of the Russian Ministry of Defense, General Charles Brown, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, spoke with General Valery Gerasimov on November 27," Dorsey stated. "This marked the first conversation between the two military leaders since General Brown assumed his role. The discussion covered a range of international and regional security matters, including the conflict in Ukraine. General Brown agreed to conduct the call without prior announcement at General Gerasimov's request."
The Pentagon and the Joint Chiefs of Staff have not yet responded to inquiries from TASS for confirmation of the conversation.
According to ABC, citing a US official, the two generals discussed measures to avoid miscalculations and escalation between their countries concerning Ukraine. Topics reportedly included US authorization of long-range precision strikes deep into Russian territory and Russia's use of the "Oreshnik" medium-range ballistic missile in a non-nuclear configuration.
Gerasimov is also said to have informed Brown of Russia's plans to conduct missile launches in the Mediterranean Sea. Previously, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced joint naval and aerospace drills in the eastern Mediterranean, during which high-precision sea- and air-launched missiles, including hypersonic "Zirkons," were tested.
