Dagestan Declares Mourning for Victims of Gas Station Explosion

A day of mourning has been announced in Dagestan following an explosion at a gas station on the outskirts of Makhachkala. The announcement was made by the press service of the region's leader, according to information provided to TASS.

 

"Due to the explosion that occurred on August 14, 2023, at a gas station situated along the Astrakhan-Makhachkala highway near the settlement of Novokuli, resulting in casualties and injuries, Sergey Melikov, the Head of Dagestan, extends his condolences to the families and friends of the victims. In response, he has issued a decree declaring August 15 as a day of mourning in the Republic of Dagestan," stated the press service.

 

It further reported that during the operational headquarters meeting convened to address the aftermath of the tragedy, a minute of silence was observed to honor the memory of the victims.

 

Throughout the day of mourning, state flags across the republic will be lowered to half-mast, and cultural institutions as well as television channels have been requested to suspend entertainment events and programs.

 

During the meeting, Melikov announced that families of the individuals who lost their lives in the gas station explosion will receive financial support of 1 million rubles each from the reserve fund of the Republic of Dagestan. Additionally, those who suffered severe injuries will be granted 400 thousand rubles, while those with minor injuries will receive 200 thousand rubles each.
