Russian Ambassador in Cairo Georgy Borisenko confirmed that Egypt had applied to join BRICS.
"Egypt has applied to join the BRICS group because one of the endeavors that BRICS is currently pursuing is to shift trade to alternative currencies, be it national currencies or a sort of joint currency. Egypt is very interested in this," the diplomat said in an interview with TASS.
According to him, in general, Egypt is very eager to develop trade and other types of economic cooperation with Russia. "Now there is a process of building new mechanisms of mutual settlements in these trade operations," the ambassador added.
The meeting of the BRICS foreign ministers was held on June 2 in Cape Town. The meeting was attended by the foreign ministers of 12 countries of the Global South that wished to join the association, namely Argentina, Bangladesh, Cuba, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Egypt, Gabon, Indonesia, Iran, the Union of the Comoros, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Venezuela.
