Russia's main tasks in the Middle East region are de-escalation and normalization of the situation and prevention of new military crises, said Alexei Skosyrev, the deputy director of the Middle East and North Africa Department of the Russian Foreign Ministry.
"First of all, it is a comprehensive and sustainable de-escalation and normalization of the situation. At the same time, Russia proceeds from the need to promote the settlement of all conflicts in the Middle East exclusively by political and diplomatic methods through inclusive and constructive dialogue without discrimination against individual parties, also under the aegis of the UN and with the involvement of key regional organizations, above all the Arab League and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation," Skosyrev said at the Valdai Club.
"The second task is to prevent the emergence of new dangerous military crises in the Middle East and North Africa region. And the third is the task of transforming the Middle East into a region of peace, good neighborliness and mutually beneficial cooperation," he stressed.
Thus, Skosyrev noted, Russia, unlike other players, has no hidden agenda. But Moscow certainly has its own interests in the region, he added.
"We energetically develop multifaceted interaction with the states of the region in various spheres - political, economic, humanitarian, military-technical, and so on. But we try to do it on the principles of mutual consideration of interests, respect and trust," he concluded.
