Hamas Affirms Continued Pursuit of Truce in Gaza Strip

01 December 2023

The Palestinian movement Hamas is advocating for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, even after Israel resumed shelling the enclave. Osama Hamdan, a member of the movement's politburo, made this assertion.

"We actively pursued a ceasefire and continue to seek it, despite the renewed Israeli aggression," he stated in an interview with Al Jazeera. "We are open to any initiatives that aim to halt the aggression in a manner aligned with the interests of our people," Hamdan added.

According to the Hamas politburo member, the Israeli army has been targeting the entire Gaza Strip. He is convinced that the main obstacle to resolving the conflict is "the Israeli entity's perspective on the Palestinians and the Palestinian issue."

On November 22, Hamas reported reaching an agreement with Israel, brokered by Egypt and Qatar, on a four-day humanitarian truce in the Gaza Strip, which took effect on November 24 at 08:00 Moscow time. The agreements envisioned the release of children and women held in the enclave in exchange for the release of children and women from Israeli prisons.

The Israeli side said it was ready to extend the ceasefire for one day for the release of 10 hostages, as well as to release 30 Palestinian prisoners each. On the morning of December 1, the Israeli army press service informed that Hamas violated the truce in the Gaza Strip and opened fire on Israeli territory, leading to the resumption of hostilities in the enclave.
