Iranian authorities have approved the Russian Sputnik V vaccine and hope to start producing it in the near future, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said on Tuesday following talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.
"I would like to inform you that the Sputnik V vaccine was also registered in Iran yesterday, it was approved by our sanitary authorities. And in the near future we hope to be able to purchase it and also begin joint production," Zarif said.
Kirill Dmitriev, the head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF), said on January 26 at the World Economic Forum in Davos that the Sputnik V vaccine would be registered in more than 25 countries in the next couple of weeks.
Last August, Russia was the first country in the world to register a vaccine against coronavirus, called Sputnik V. The drug was developed by the Gamaleya National Research Center for Epidemiology and Microbiology. According to the Center, more than 50 countries have applied for the vaccine.
