Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian has requested the Secretary-General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Hissein Brahim Taha to summon an emergency session of the Council of Foreign Ministers (CFM) due to the severe situation in the Gaza Strip and Israeli attacks on the Palestinian city of Rafah.
Abdollahian, in a phone call with Taha, highlighted the dire humanitarian conditions in Gaza and denounced Israel's assault on Rafah. He argued that it has been nearly five months since the last OIC Ministerial Council meeting and urged for an immediate CFM meeting to adopt decisive actions against Israel's recent aggression.
The Iranian Foreign Ministry's website reports that Taha received Abdollahian's proposal favorably and assured him that he would initiate the extraordinary meeting after consulting with the member states.
On February 7, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu indicated that the military had been ordered to prepare for potential hostilities in Rafah, which borders the Gaza Strip with Egypt. Two days later, he directed the army to devise a strategy for civilian evacuation and to neutralize the remaining Hamas battalions in the city. On the evening of February 12, reports surfaced of substantial Israeli military strikes on Rafah, killing 100 and injuring 230 Palestinians, according to Al Mayadeen.
