Media Report: US Attitude Towards Gaza Highlights Selective Approach to International Law

01 December 2023

In Thursday's article for The New York Times, Ben Rhodes, former Deputy National Security Aide to President Barack Obama, wrote that the United States, through its support for Israel in the Gaza Strip conflict, has demonstrated a selective approach to respecting international law.

"In the Gaza Strip, the United States supported an Israeli military operation that killed civilians. This once again demonstrated to much of the world that our adherence to international law and norms is selective. This is a manifestation of cynicism that can have severe consequences," Rhodes wrote. He emphasized that there is currently a resurgence of autocracy and ethno-nationalism around the world.

"Politics and geopolitics have devolved into a zero-sum game. In this world, right is perceived to be on the side of the strong," Rhodes concluded.

The New York Times previously highlighted Washington's challenging position due to its support for Israel amid global concern over civilian casualties in the Gaza Strip. NBC News, citing sources, reported that the US is apprehensive about potential isolation due to international criticism of its stance on the Middle East conflict.
