No disagreement on Syrian dossier at Arab ministerial meeting in Jeddah

The Syrian delegation is satisfied with the atmosphere at the meeting of the Council of the Arab League in the city of Jeddah before the regional summit, which opens on May 19. Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad told Al Ekhbariya TV on Wednesday.

 

"There was no disagreement on the Syrian dossier at the Arab ministers' meeting," he said. - "We continue to work together with our Arab brothers who respect Syria's role in regional and international arenas."

 

The foreign minister thanked Saudi Arabia "for the role the kingdom has played in recent months to intensify joint Arab action." "Syria will welcome any role for Arab countries in post-war reconstruction," he stressed. - "We also look forward to effective Arab assistance to Syrian refugees and to helping them return to their homeland."

 

 

Earlier in Jeddah, Mekdad held talks with his counterparts from Jordan, Lebanon, Oman, Tunisia and the United Arab Emirates, and met with Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit.

 

On May 15, upon his arrival in Jeddah, Mekdad said Syria "has turned the page of the past and seeks to fully develop relations with Arab countries." According to him, Damascus advocates "strengthening Arab solidarity through joint actions and the formation of a common strategic vision in response to the dangerous challenges the Arab world faces."

 

On May 7, at an emergency meeting in Cairo, the Arab League Council decided to restore Syria's position in the regional community. Its membership had been suspended in November 2011 in the midst of an internal crisis that escalated into armed conflict. After the February 6 earthquake, Arab states reached out to Syria and provided significant humanitarian assistance.
