Kyrgyz President Sooronbay Jeenbekov will resign only after the new parliamentary elections, press secretary of the head of state Tolgonay Stamaliyeva told RIA Novosti.
According to the interlocutor of the agency, today Jeenbekov held a meeting with the new Prime Minister of the Republic Sadyr Zhaparov, during which "the Prime Minister voiced his demand: the President must resign tonight".
"Jeenbekov emphasized once again that now he has no right to resign from the post of the president, as this will lead to an unpredictable scenario of events to the detriment of the state. He reminded that he adheres to the same position that he voiced on October 9, 2020: he will resign after returning the country to the legal field," Stamaliyeva stressed.
In early October parliamentary elections were held in Kyrgyzstan, according to preliminary results of which pro-governmental parties "Birimdik" (24,52% of votes) and "Mekenim Kyrgyzstan" (23,89%) and "Kyrgyzstan" (8,73%) (23,89%), as well as centrist and "Butun Kyrgyzstan" (7,11%) were to pass to the legislative body. The rest failed to overcome the seven percent barrier and reported multiple violations.
Supporters of the losing parties took to the streets on the same day. One of them, the Social Democrats of Kyrgyzstan, is headed by Seyitbek Atambayev, son of the former president Almazbek Atambayev.
On Tuesday night, protesters broke into the building of the White House, where the parliament and the administration of the head of state are located, then headed towards the State Committee for National Security and released former President Almazbek Atambayev and a number of his associates from detention. More than 900 people, including law enforcement officials, were injured in the clashes.
The Central Election Commission soon invalidated the election results. Jeenbekov also admitted that vote-buying was a problem during the election process. The prime minister, the speaker of parliament, governors of several regions, the mayor of Bishkek and several other officials resigned.
Last week, member of the opposition Ata-Meken party Kanybek Imanaliyev told RIA Novosti that parliament had launched a presidential impeachment procedure.
