Indirect talks between Israel and the Palestinian movement Hamas on establishing a ceasefire in Gaza have reached their final stage, focusing on the agreement's concluding terms, Qatar’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Majid bin Mohammed Al-Ansari announced during a briefing.
“I can confirm that negotiations are ongoing in Doha at the highest possible level, involving our partners in Egypt and the United States to minimize the many differences between the sides,” Al-Ansari stated. He emphasized that the discussions are now in their final phase. According to the Qatari official, “obstacles that previously existed have been overcome in recent days.”
“Until an official announcement is made, no agreement can be confirmed, so we should temper our optimism about the current progress. However, we sincerely hope this will soon lead to a final agreement,” he added. “We again urge both sides to approach these ongoing negotiations with seriousness,” Al-Ansari continued.
On Monday, Reuters, citing a source, reported that an additional round of talks on the Gaza ceasefire would take place in Doha on the morning of January 14. Participants include US President-elect Donald Trump's special envoy to the Middle East, Steven Witkoff, the White House National Security Council’s Middle East and North Africa coordinator Brett McGurk, Israeli Mossad chief David Barnea, and Shin Bet head Ronen Bar. According to the Egyptian channel Al-Qahera Al-Ikhbariya, several further rounds of negotiations on Gaza will soon be held in Cairo.
