Russia and Iraq are set to commemorate the 80th anniversary of their diplomatic relations with a series of events throughout the year. Vadim Zaichikov, Head of the Department of Education and Science at Rossotrudnichestvo, made this announcement during the opening of the conference titled "International Strengthening of Scientific, Educational, Cultural, and Friendly Relations Between Russia and Arab Countries," held at the Russian National Research Medical University (RNIMU) named after N.I. Pirogov, part of the Russian Ministry of Health.
“The anniversary of our diplomatic relations is approaching in the first half of September, just a month away. However, we have planned events throughout the year to mark this significant occasion,” Zaichikov stated.
He highlighted the historical depth of the relationship between Russia and Iraq, noting the cooperation in military technology, infrastructure development in Iraq, and the recent stage where Russia has become the largest foreign investor in Iraq’s oil and gas sector. “The 80-year history of our relations includes many positive achievements, and it’s important that we celebrate this milestone,” he added.
Zaichikov also emphasized Rossotrudnichestvo’s role in promoting Russian education, noting a growing number of Arab students studying in Russia. “The number of Arab students in the Russian Federation is increasing every year,” he remarked.
Iraqi Students Welcome in Russia
Sergey Lukyanov, Rector of Pirogov Russian National Research Medical University, spoke about the collaboration between Russia and Iraq in science and education. “As the rector of an institution dedicated to training doctors, one of the most humane professions, I hope our cooperation will deepen. We are eager to welcome students and specialists from Iraq and are committed to fostering exchanges to strengthen our ties,” Lukyanov said.
Al-Barghash Ali Mohammed, President of the Association for International Cooperation and Preservation of the Arabic Language, voiced strong support from Iraq's academic community for Russia amid its current challenges with the West. Meanwhile, Al-Barghash Alak Ali Mohammed, Director General of the Russian House in Iraq, mentioned the institution’s work with Russian and Iraqi educators and students. A new agreement to establish a partner Russian House in Najaf was signed on July 17.
