Russia calls on the UN "not to postpone" the resolution of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, as it is a key conflict for the entire Middle East, Russia's permanent representative to the UN, Vasily Nebenzia, said at a Security Council meeting on Thursday.

"Today there are no hostilities in Palestine and Israel. However, this does not mean that we can postpone the resolution of the Palestinian issue until later," stressed the Russian permanent representative. - "Unfortunately, history proves again and again that this is the key problem for the entire Middle East and the world as a whole".

"It is obvious that there will be no final status of peace in the Middle East until all the issues are resolved," stated Nebenzia. He also stressed that "international and regional efforts should be focused on the creation of conditions for restarting of direct negotiations between Palestinians and Israelis on the basis of UN resolutions and the principle of "two states" in order to prevent relapse of violent confrontation".

Middle East Quartet

Nebenzia said Russia is asking the US, EU and UN to consider its proposal for a ministerial meeting of the Middle East Quartet of mediators.

"We again invite our colleagues to consider our proposal to hold a ministerial meeting of the Quartet, as well as its meeting in an expanded format with the participation of regional states and the Palestinians and Israelis themselves," he said.

The Permanent Representative stressed that the active discussion of the Palestinian question over the past two weeks in the Security Council as well as in the General Assembly showed that "the international community as a whole is united in its understanding of the ultimate goal of a settlement as well as its legal framework." "It is important to maintain this unity, including among UN Security Council members. It is necessary to convert the expressed support for these parameters into concrete actions," he concluded.
