Russia has contributed 2 million Swiss francs ($2.25 million) to the budget of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) for assistance in solving humanitarian problems in Nagorno-Karabakh.
"In accordance with the decision of the Russian government, a voluntary contribution of 2 million Swiss francs has been made to the ICRC budget to finance expenses related to taking measures to resolve the humanitarian consequences of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict," the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a commentary distributed Friday.
It is noted that this direction had become one of the priorities "in the fruitful cooperation between the Russian Federation and the ICRC." "Our country is making large-scale efforts to assist the civilian population and restore civilian infrastructure in the region," the diplomatic office stressed, adding that Moscow is open to further cooperation with the committee and hopes to continue its effective work.
On November 24, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on the Russia-24 TV channel that Russian President Vladimir Putin, during his visit to Moscow of ICRC President Peter Maurer, supported a proposal to earmark a voluntary contribution to support the organization's work in Nagorno-Karabakh.
