Russia Urges UN Security Council to Cease Interference in Sudan's Internal Affairs

20 December

Russia has called on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to support an internal Sudanese dialogue and refrain from external interference, Vasily Nebenzya, Russia's Permanent Representative to the UN, said during a UNSC session on Sudan.

Nebenzya emphasized that achieving a ceasefire remains the top priority for Sudan. Without it, measures aimed at protecting civilians, ensuring humanitarian access, and safeguarding women and children from violence will yield limited results. “Only the parties involved in the conflict can agree on a ceasefire. Imposing conditions or forcing negotiations through ultimatums is unacceptable and unprofessional,” he stated.

He also expressed concern over external interference, which he argued worsens the plight of Sudan's population. According to Nebenzya, foreign influence in the conflict and attempts by some nations to implement “dubious political engineering schemes” only exacerbate the crisis. He highlighted Russia's use of its veto against a resolution that undermined Sudan's sovereignty.

“Any peace initiatives without the meaningful involvement of Port Sudan are unworkable,” Nebenzya remarked, urging the UNSC to back efforts aimed at stabilizing the situation. He advocated for launching an inclusive internal dialogue involving political forces with broad public support.

Nebenzya reiterated that the Sudanese people have the right to address their internal issues independently, free from external pressure. “Ignoring the central government of Sudan equates to tacitly endorsing violence and perpetuating the suffering of the population,” he concluded.
