Russian Envoy to Vienna: after Iran's response, "ball in US court"

16 August 2022

US must respond to Iran's reaction on returning to the nuclear deal, now the ball is in US court," Russian permanent representative to the international organizations in Vienna Mikhail Ulyanov said on Tuesday on the Russia-24 TV channel.

"A deal can take place as early as this week. Yesterday's developments show that it could happen, if not this week, then next week. The Iranians responded last night and provided a reaction to the final text of the agreements. It is, in my view, constructive. They reiterate their willingness to make a deal, provided the Americans accept the 3 amendments, which I think are reasonable," he pointed out. - "Now the ball is in US court, the Americans have to respond. If the answer is predominantly positive, it means there will soon be a ministerial meeting where the deal will be concluded and then it will be implemented."

Ulyanov also noted that if Republicans come to the White House, Iran will immediately respond and refuse to fulfill many of its nuclear obligations that it can now commit to. " It won't be painless for the US, as it will be for the regional world and international relations in general," the diplomat added.

The JCPOA was signed with Iran in 2015 to address the crisis over its nuclear developments by the permanent UN Security Council Five and Germany. In 2018, then-US President Donald Trump decided to withdraw from the arrangement. Current US leader Joe Biden has repeatedly signaled his willingness to bring Washington back into the nuclear deal with Tehran. Russia, Britain, Germany, China, the US and France have been negotiating with Iran in Vienna since last April to restore the JCPOA to its original form.
