Russia is closely monitoring the situation on the Azerbaijani-Armenian border and maintains operational ties through military and border services. This was stated in a commentary of the Russian Foreign Ministry distributed on Tuesday.
"We continue to closely monitor the situation related to the border incident between Azerbaijan and Armenia. The Russian side is assisting Baku and Yerevan in reducing tension within the framework of regular contacts at the highest and highest levels. We maintain operational ties through the military and border services of our countries," the ministry pointed out.
Smolensk Square stressed that Russia sees a solution to the conflict in launching the process of delimitation of the border with its subsequent demarcation. "We proceed from the fact that all such incidents should be resolved exclusively through peaceful, negotiated means. We see the launch of the process of delimitation of the Azerbaijani-Armenian border with its subsequent demarcation as a long-term solution. The Russian Federation is ready to continue supporting consistent normalization of the situation in South Caucasus," the commentary notes.
The Russian Foreign Ministry also reiterated the need for strict observance of the ceasefire, as well as the strict implementation of other provisions of the statements of the leaders of Azerbaijan, Armenia and Russia on November 9, 2020, and January 11, 2021.
On May 12, the Armenian Defense Ministry reported that Azerbaijani armed forces tried to carry out "certain works" in one of the border regions of the Syunik region in order to "adjust the border." According to the ministry, after the measures taken by Armenian units, the Azerbaijani military stopped these works. On the same evening acting Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan convened a session of the Armenian Security Council, during which he called the events infringement upon Armenia's territory. According to him, the Azerbaijani armed forces crossed the state border of Armenia, penetrating 3.5 km deep.
