Russian MFA considers terrorist attack in Damascus as a challenge to efforts to settle conflict in Syria

Moscow condemns the terrorist attack in Damascus aimed at hindering the process of political settlement in Syria and ensuring security in the capital. This was stated in a Russian foreign ministry statement issued on Wednesday in connection with this morning's bombing of a bus with Syrian military personnel.

"We strongly condemn this daring terrorist attack. We express our sincere condolences to the families of the victims and wish a speedy recovery to the injured. We view this bloody crime as a brazen challenge aimed at questioning the ability of the Syrian authorities to ensure the security of the capital, provoking a new round of violence and hindering efforts for a political settlement in Syria," the Russian foreign ministry said.

Moscow considers it no coincidence that the action was carried out at a time when the meetings of the inter-Syrian constitutional committee resumed in Geneva, the Russian foreign ministry added.

"Once again, we note the importance of uniting international efforts in the fight against the global terrorist threat on the existing international legal basis, including the establishment of interaction in this area with the Syrian government," the Russian foreign ministry concluded.

On the morning of October 20, a bus carrying Syrian soldiers was blown up in the center of Damascus near Dama Rose Hotel. There were 14 casualties in the attack, several more were wounded.
