Russian MFA welcomes successful prisoner exchange in Yemen conflict

18 April 2023

The prisoner exchange between the Yemeni authorities and the insurgent movement Ansar Allah (Houthis) shows once again the willingness of the warring parties not by words but by deeds to find compromises, the Russian MFA said in a statement released on Tuesday.

According to it, with the assistance of the United Nations and the International Committee of the Red Cross, a three-day exchange procedure was completed on April 16. As a result, about 900 people from both sides were released.

"Moscow welcomes the successful implementation of this humanitarian action, which is further proof of the willingness of the warring sides in the Yemen conflict to find compromises and mutually acceptable solutions, not in words but in deeds. We hope that the work in this direction will continue," stressed Smolenskaya Square.

As noted in the Russian MFA, this is the second exchange since the beginning of the military-political crisis in Yemen in 2015, the first took place in October 2020 and provided for the release of more than 1 thousand people. The ministry expects that such constructive steps will contribute to further strengthening of confidence between the parties to the conflict and will make it possible to establish a reliable ceasefire, reduce the severity of the socio-economic crisis and lay the foundation for a full-fledged dialogue under the auspices of the UN.

Smolenskaya Square stressed that the Russian Federation in coordination with the leading political forces of the country and interested regional partners will continue to make active efforts to establish a peace process as soon as possible.
