Taliban delegation meets with 16 European countries in Qatar

17 February 2022

A delegation from the radical Taliban movement (banned in Russia) met in Qatar with representatives from 16 European countries to discuss several pressing humanitarian, economic and other issues for Afghanistan. A statement about this was published Wednesday on Twitter on the page of the Afghan foreign ministry.

"A high-ranking delegation from the 'Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan' (the name of the state used by the Taliban - TASS) led by Foreign Minister [in the interim government] Amir Khan Muttaqi met today in Doha with representatives of 16 European countries. They discussed the humanitarian and economic situation in Afghanistan, human rights, <...> education, teachers' salaries and the positive changes [in the country] that took place recently," the text stressed.

They also discussed the US freezing of the Central Bank of Afghanistan's $7 billion assets, an order that was signed by US President Joe Biden on February 11. Representatives of the radicals once again expressed their disagreement with the decision of the White House.

The Taliban delegation arrived for talks in Doha on February 13. The radicals have already held consultations with representatives of the Arab Gulf Cooperation Council and the European Union.

The Taliban have had a political office in Qatar since 2013. Since the seizure of power in Afghanistan in late summer and early fall of 2021, delegations of radicals have already visited Doha several times, where they held consultations with representatives of the EU, the US, China, Japan, Britain, Italy and several other countries, as well as international organizations.
