The oldest Arab ruler, 91-year-old Emir of Kuwait Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah or Sabah IV, died in the US, where he has been receiving treatment since late July following surgery, Emir Ali Al-Jarah Al-Sabah, Minister for Chancellery Affairs, told Kuwait State Television on Tuesday.
"The Emir of Kuwait, His Majesty Sabah al-Ahmad al-Sabah, has moved on to Allah," al-Sabah said.
Sabah IV ruled Kuwait since January 2006. Prior to that, he served as prime minister and previously headed the country's foreign ministry for several decades.
The Office of the Emir of Kuwait reported July 18 that the head of state was hospitalized for medical examinations. After that, the Minister for Chancellery Affairs reported that the Emir had had a successful operation. At the same time, the Emir's younger brother and Crown Prince Nawaf Al Ahmed Al Jaber Al Sabah was temporarily appointed to perform a number of duties of the Emir of the State.
Later in July, the Emir of Kuwait was taken to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, in the north of the United States, on an air mobile hospital in the United States. According to some reports, the Emir underwent surgery to remove two tumors. After that, the Kuwaiti authorities have repeatedly reported that the Emir's health is stable and he is on the mend.
