Lebanese President Michel Aoun decided on Monday to instruct the Ambassador to Germany, Mustafa Abid, to form a new government, the head of the presidential office Antoine Shoukair told reporters.
"After consultations with the parliamentary factions, the President of the Republic, Michel Aoun, decided to entrust the formation of the government to Mustafa Abid," the head of the office said.
According to Al Jadeed TV, the Lebanese diplomat received the support of 90 out of 128 members of Parliament following the consultations.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting with the President, Abid said that he expects to form a Cabinet in a short time, given the difficult situation in Lebanon after the devastating explosion in the port of Beirut. "Many Lebanese are anxious about their present and future, so there is no time for empty speeches and promises," he said. "God willing, we will be able to complete the task of selecting a working team of professionals and specialists to fulfill the assigned mission as soon as possible."
Earlier, the head of the pro-presidential Free Patriotic movement, Gibran Basil, said in his speech that Lebanese politicians "fulfilled their obligations to the international community and managed to quickly agree on the candidacy of a new Prime Minister." Lebanon was left without a government on August 10 after the resignation of the technocrat cabinet led by Hassan Diab amid the tragedy caused by the explosion in the port of Beirut.
On Monday afternoon, French President Emmanuel Macron, who oversees the provision of international financial assistance to Lebanon, will arrive in Beirut on a mediation mission. On Friday, the French leader said that he would not leave Lebanon alone, where civil war may break out again due to the confrontation of regional forces.
