The Ministry of Health of the United Arab Emirates approved the third phase of clinical trials of the coronavirus vaccine "Sputnik V" in the country, the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF) reports.
"We are glad to get approval for the beginning of trials and look forward to announcing the registration process for volunteers in the future. As part of the III phase clinical trials of the Sputnik V vaccine, we are planning to conduct trials in several other countries in the coming months," Kirill Dmitriev, the head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF) said.
The trials will be supported by PureHealth, a leading provider of laboratory services in the UAE, and supervised by the Abu Dhabi Department of Health and the Ministry of Health and Prevention. The Abu Dhabi Health Services Company (SEHA) will process medical protocols.
In early August, the Russian Ministry of Health registered the world's first vaccine for COVID-19 prevention, developed by specialists from the Gamaleya Center with the support of the RDIF. It was called "Sputnik V". In summer the drug successfully passed two stages of trials on volunteers aged 18 to 60 years, who eventually formed an immune response and antibodies to SARS-CoV-2.
The head of the Fund reported that the institution received applications from more than 20 countries to purchase one billion doses of Sputnik V. Russia has agreed to manufacture in five countries, and the existing facilities allow producing up to 500 million doses annually.
The post-registration phase of clinical trials started in September: a total of 40 thousand people will take part in it. Apart from the UAE, the trials are conducted in Russia and Belarus. Trial participants, who will be injected with "Sputnik V", will be under medical supervision for 90 days after the injection.
A few weeks ago, the Ministry of Health began registering another Russian vaccine - "EpiVacCorona". The process is planned to be completed by October 15.
