UNICEF States Gaza Has Become a Graveyard for Children

31 October 2023

The Gaza Strip has tragically become a graveyard for children, with the number of minors who have lost their lives in the Palestinian enclave surpassing 3,400, James Elder, the spokesman for the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF) said during a briefing held in Geneva.

"Gaza has become a graveyard for children," he emphasized. Citing the most recent statistics from the Gaza Health Ministry, James Elder disclosed that the death toll of children in the enclave has now exceeded 3,450. He reiterated his plea to Israeli authorities, urging them to implement an immediate ceasefire and fully open all border crossings to ensure the uninterrupted delivery of humanitarian aid. "With a 72-hour ceasefire, we could potentially save the lives of 1,000 children," argued the UNICEF representative.

Elder emphasized that the danger to children extends beyond the direct impact of bombs and mortars. He pointed out that infant deaths due to dehydration are becoming an increasingly alarming concern in the enclave. Gaza's water production stands at a mere 5% of what is required, primarily because most desalination plants are non-operational, either due to damage or a lack of fuel.

Earlier, the Gaza Health Ministry, as reported by Al Jazeera, indicated that the death toll resulting from the escalating conflict in the Middle East has now reached 8,525 in the Gaza Strip.
