The Russian Federation expects that the conference with the participation of the chairmen of the parliaments of the "Caspian Five" will be held in each of the countries one by one. State Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin said this on Monday, speaking in the Majlis (parliament) of Turkmenistan.
"Given the high geopolitical and economic importance of the Caspian Sea, cooperation within the framework of the "Caspian Five" (Russia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan and Iran) plays a special role today. The practical implementation of the agreements reached by the heads of the five states will contribute to the formation of the parliamentary dimension of the "Caspian Five", said the chairman of the Duma.
"We expect that the conference with the participation of the chairmen of the parliaments of the Caspian countries will be held in each of the states in turn. We discussed this issue during the visit to our country and the visit to the State Duma of the respected Arkadag [Chairman of the People's Council (Khalk Maslakhaty) of Turkmenistan, the former president of this country Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov]. Having secured his support, today we are discussing the possibility of holding a parliamentary assembly here in Turkmenistan in Ashgabat in 2024. If you support such a proposal, we could already be preparing for this format of cooperation," he stressed.
At the end of his speech at the Majlis, Volodin laid a wreath at the People's Memory memorial.
Volodin leads the Duma delegation, which arrived in the Turkmen capital of Ashgabat on Sunday. The delegation includes representatives of specialized committees. According to the press service of the lower house, this visit of the State Duma delegation headed by its chairman was the first in 11 years.
