27 August 2020

A group of about 30 people tried to enter the territory of the Libyan Embassy in Minsk on Thursday and seize it, Stanislav Kudryashov, security adviser to the charge d'affaires of Libya in Belarus, told TASS.

"An unidentified group of people at 06:00 tried to enter the protected circuit, "he said, adding that "it was an attempt to forcibly capture."

Kudryashov also said that the capture of the Libyan Embassy in Minsk was attempted in the interests of the Government of National Accord (GNA), based in Tripoli. "Of course, this was organized in the interests of the government in Tripoli," he said. Kudryashov added that the organizer of the attack was known. "We know the organizer - a former military attache who served as an Ambassador for some time, his powers ended, and he swore an oath to the Government of National Accord," the diplomat explained. He also said that in Belarus, according to the Embassy, there was another person who was authorized to represent the interests of the GNA in Tripoli.

Kudryashov said that the current charge d'affaires of Libya in Belarus, Mohammed Asteita, who represents the authorities in Eastern Libya, received minor injuries during the attack on the Embassy. "They tried to injure the temporary attorney with gas spray. One of the attackers tried to hit him," the source said. He assured that the injured diplomat is fine.

The attackers at the Libyan Embassy in Minsk have already left its territory. "Now these people have already left," Kudryashov assured. At the same time, he noted that the Embassy staff coped with the situation on their own and would like to see law enforcement officers of Belarus make more efforts to protect diplomatic missions. "We will now prepare appeals to the police and the Belarusian Foreign Ministry, strengthen the doors and perimeter of the Embassy as much as possible. We hope that there will be a reaction, " he stressed.

Previously, the tut.by portal said that about 30 unknown people with Bulgarian women climbed over the fence of the Libyan Embassy in Minsk in the morning and tried to enter the building. Employees of the Moldovan Embassy, located next door, called the police. In the building of the Embassy of Libya, a window and a door were broken.
