Incumbent President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi has secured victory in Egypt's general elections held on December 10-12, ensuring his presidency for the next six years. The official results were announced in Cairo by the Egyptian National Election Commission.
In the general vote, both within Egypt and abroad, 89.6% of participating voters chose el-Sisi, as reported by Hazem Badawi, the head of the National Election Commission. A total of 39,702,451 Egyptians cast their votes in favor of the incumbent president. The elections saw a significant turnout, with nearly 70% of the over 67 million eligible voters participating, marking the highest turnout in the country's history at 66.8%, according to Badawi. The total number of voters, both inside and outside Egypt, reached 44,077,668.
The National Election Commission also disclosed that between 1.9% and 4.5% of the votes cast by participating Egyptians were distributed among the other three presidential candidates.
Notably, el-Sisi previously won the presidency in 2014, receiving 96.91% of the popular vote. In April 2019, constitutional amendments extended the presidential term from four to six years with a limit of one re-election. A transitional article further prolonged el-Sisi's term until 2024 and allowed for a potential third term. The amendments also expanded the president's powers, granting the authority to appoint judges, including to the Supreme Constitutional Court, and the prosecutor general.
The recent elections, held on December 10-12, 2023, marked el-Sisi's third and, according to the current constitution, final bid for the presidency.
