Acting President of Kyrgyzstan Sadyr Zhaparov said during a trip to Kochkor district of Naryn region that he intends to run for the post of head of state in the elections in January 2021.
"I will go to the elections on an equal footing with others. If they elect me, I will be president, if don't, then I won't" the Kyrgyz agency 24.kg quotes Zhaparov.
According to the agency, Zhaparov also said that for this purpose he intended to resign as the acting head of state in early December.
Kyrgyzstan's Central Election Commission set January 10 as the date of early presidential elections. According to the constitution of the republic, the interim head of state has no right to run for this post until amendments to the main law of the state are made.
On October 5 mass protests of those who disagreed with the results of parliamentary elections that took place on October 4 broke out in Kyrgyzstan. After clashes of protesters with law-enforcement agencies, supporters of opposition parties who had not passed to parliament seized the building of parliament where the presidential administration is located. More than 1,200 people were injured and one was killed in the clashes. Kubatbek Boronov, Kyrgyzstan's prime minister, resigned. President Sooronbay Jeenbekov, according to his spokesperson, was in Bishkek all the time and controlled the situation. Against the backdrop of protests, the Kyrgyz Central Election Commission canceled the election results.
The riots in Bishkek resumed on October 9. Supporters and opponents of Prime Minister Sadyr Zhaparov clashed in the central square. Seven people were injured. After the voluntary resignation of Jeenbekov on October 15 the situation in the republic stabilized. Protests stopped. Authorities of the head of state passed on to prime minister Zhaparov.
