Israel will face a severe response if it attacks Lebanon under the pretext of retaliating for the strike on Majdal Shams in the Golan Heights, according to Kamal Kharazi, an advisor to Iran's spiritual leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and head of the Islamic Republic's strategic council for international relations.
“Israel should know that if it takes this risk, it will face a harsh response. The best solution for [Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin] Netanyahu is to end the brutal war in the Gaza Strip, because by continuing the war it will gain nothing but casualties and destruction,” Kharazi was quoted by IRNA as saying.
Kharazi dismissed Israel's accusations that Hezbollah was responsible for the strike on Majdal Shams, calling them "ludicrous." He argued that the residents of the occupied Golan Heights are opposed to Israeli authorities and that Hezbollah, an ally of Syria, would not target them. This is evidenced by the presence of portraits of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in Golan settlements and protests against Netanyahu's visit to Majdal Shams.
On the evening of July 27, the Israeli army reported extensive shelling from Lebanon targeting northern Israel. One of the rockets exploded on a soccer field in the Druze village of Majdal Shams, killing 12 people and injuring about 40. Israeli authorities blamed Lebanon and Hezbollah for the attack, promising a harsh response. During Netanyahu's visit to the village, residents accused him of being responsible for the deaths of their children.
Hezbollah has informed the UN Interim Force in Lebanon that the deaths in Majdal Shams were caused by the fall of an Israeli anti-missile. Acting Foreign Minister Abdullah Bou Habib has called for an international investigation to clarify the incident's circumstances.
