The African Union condemned on Sunday the attempted seizure of power by force in Guinea and called for the immediate release of President Alpha Condé. This was stated in a joint statement by Felix Tshisekedi, chairman of the African Union (AU), president of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), and Moussa Faki Mahamat, chairman of the AU Commission, published on the African Union portal.

"Any seizure of power by force is to be condemned," the document said. The African Union leadership proposed the convening of an emergency meeting of the AU Peace and Security Council "to examine the new situation in Guinea and to take appropriate action in the circumstances."

The AU Peace and Security Council is one of the permanent governing bodies of the international organization's collective security, it deals with the prevention, management and resolution of conflicts.

Guinea's elite special forces unit led by its commander, сolonel Mamadi Doumbouya, revolted on Sunday, capturing the country's president, Alpha Condé. According to the Guinean news portal Guineenews, there is still high political uncertainty in this West African country today.
