The African Union's (AU) Peace and Security Council is scheduled to convene on September 1 to assess the situation in Gabon following the military's seizure of power through a coup d'état. Reuters reported this development, citing the AU headquarters in the Ethiopian capital of Addis Ababa.
The Peace and Security Council stands as a permanent governing entity within the African Union, responsible for matters of collective security. It focuses on conflict prevention, management, and resolution.
A day prior to this announcement, Moussa Faki Mahamat, the Chairperson of the AU Commission, strongly denounced the military's assumption of power in Gabon. He expressed deep concern about the unfolding events, which he deemed a grave violation of the African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance. On behalf of the entire African Union, he insisted that Gabon's military and security forces strictly adhere to their designated roles within the republic. He further called for the protection of the physical safety of Gabon's President Ali Ben Bongo Ondimba, his family and members of his government.
