Africa's ideas on Ukraine to be viewed in context of West-Russia confrontation, Lavrov says

African countries' proposals for resolving the Ukrainian crisis should be considered in the context of the confrontation between the West and Russia, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov told a press conference on Tuesday following talks with Burundi's Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Albert Shingiro.

"We understand that in this context, the ideas voiced by countries of the global majority, including African countries, that they would like to contribute to finding some ways to settle this situation, they are sincere, seeking to help in some way," said the head of the Russian diplomatic mission. "We value such approaches, but these ideas should be considered in the context of the geopolitical confrontation the West has ventured against Russia and China, as was proclaimed in the recent Group of Seven documents," Lavrov pointed out.

On May 16, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa announced that Russian and Ukrainian authorities had agreed to receive a delegation from Africa to seek a peaceful resolution of the conflict. He spoke on behalf of Egypt, Zambia, the Republic of Congo, Senegal, Uganda, and South Africa. Consultations are currently underway to schedule the trip. The peace mission is expected to visit Moscow and Kiev before the Russia-Africa summit in St. Petersburg in the second half of July.
