Algeria Bars French Air Force Overflight Amid Niger Invasion Concerns

22 August 2023

Algerian authorities have reportedly prohibited the overflight of French military aircraft over their territory in the event of a potential military intervention in Niger. Radio Algérienne, a state-run Algerian radio station, relayed this information, stating that the Algerian government has "rejected the request by France to conduct flights over its territory for potential strikes on Niger."

Subsequently, after Algeria's refusal, France made a similar request to Moroccan leadership, which was reportedly granted.

Sources cited by the radio station suggest that preparations for a military intervention in Niger are already underway, with all necessary military equipment ready.

Previously, the Algerian foreign ministry had expressed its belief in the potential for a negotiated political resolution to the crisis involving Niger. However, indications of an imminent military intervention in Niger have been growing, according to the ministry's statement. Algeria's leadership expressed regret over the prioritization of force over a peaceful restoration of constitutional and democratic order in the neighboring country.
