Algeria Demands Urgent UN Security Council Meeting Over New Attacks in Palestine

03 September

Algeria has called for an urgent meeting of the UN Security Council to address the escalating situation due to recent Israeli military raids in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, as reported by Algerian state radio.

The Algerian government highlighted “the ongoing genocide of the Gaza population by the Zionist occupation forces (Israel — TASS)” and condemned the brutal operations in the West Bank. According to Algerian diplomats, approximately 700 people, including over 150 children, have been killed by Israeli forces in the West Bank since October 2023.

Algeria insists that the UN Security Council members “reaffirm their support for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and uphold the two-state solution as the only path to a just and lasting peace in the Middle East.” Additionally, Algeria urged the UNSC to denounce the policies of the Israeli government, which it accuses of undermining the prospects for a Palestinian state and disregarding the historic rights of the Palestinian people.

As a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, Algeria has been closely monitoring the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, consistently condemning Israel's military actions and expressing solidarity with the Palestinian people. Algeria has also been involved in sending humanitarian aid to Gaza.

The Middle East conflict sharply escalated following the October 7, 2023, incursion by Hamas fighters from Gaza into Israeli territory. In response, Israel launched a military operation in Gaza to dismantle Hamas' military and political infrastructure and rescue the hostages. The conflict continues to this day.

According to the Gaza Ministry of Health, over 40,800 people, mostly women and children, have been killed due to Israeli military actions since the beginning of October.
