Algeria Detains Members of Spy Network Working for Morocco

02 September

Algerian security services have detained seven members of a spy network in the city of Tlemcen, located in the northwest of the country, who are accused of conducting illegal activities aimed at undermining state security in the interests of Morocco.

The detained individuals include three Algerians and four Moroccan nationals who entered Algeria illegally. According to reports from the AL24news news portal, the group was involved in recruiting Moroccan and Algerian citizens with the intention of targeting Algerian administrative and security institutions.

Investigators revealed that the network received instructions from a Moroccan handler. All seven suspects are currently in custody, and the investigation is ongoing.

These arrests come just days before Algeria’s early presidential elections, scheduled for September 7.

Algeria and Morocco have had strained relations for decades, primarily due to their opposing positions on the issue of Western Sahara. In August 2021, Algeria severed diplomatic ties with Morocco, accusing its neighbor of committing “continuous hostile acts.” The land border between the two countries has been closed since August 1994.
