Algeria has excluded French companies from its wheat import tender and instructed participating firms not to offer wheat of French origin. According to Reuters, this decision comes amid ongoing tensions between Algeria and France.
Reuters reports that on Tuesday, French firms were not invited to participate in the regular tender conducted by Algeria's Interprofessional Cereals Office. Furthermore, companies allowed to compete in the tender were advised against offering French wheat.
Algeria is one of the world’s largest wheat buyers, and for many years, France has been a key supplier to the North African republic.
Relations between Algeria and France have been strained for several months. On July 30, Algeria decided to immediately recall its ambassador to France after Paris officially endorsed Morocco's plan to grant autonomy to Western Sahara as the only solution to the conflict. Algeria, on the other hand, has long supported the right of the Sahrawi people to self-determination and independence.
