Algeria Proposes Transitional Period to Resolve Crisis in Niger

29 August 2023

Algeria has proposed an initiative to address the crisis in Niger by suggesting the implementation of a six-month transitional period led by civilian authorities. This proposal aims to facilitate a resolution to the current situation, as stated by Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf.

"We have put forward an initiative for a political resolution in Niger, which involves the creation of a six-month transitional period overseen by a civilian authority under the leadership of a mutually agreed upon individual," the minister stated, as reported by Al Mayadeen TV.

Attaf emphasized that the transitional period aims to "facilitate the negotiation of political agreements that include all parties in Niger without any exclusions."

"Niger is currently experiencing a critical and pivotal phase of political, constitutional, and institutional challenges," the Algerian foreign minister added.

"Algeria advocates for the reinstatement of constitutional order and the preservation of democratic institutions in Niger, reaffirming Mohamed Bazoum's legitimacy as the country's president," Attaf concluded.

Military intervention

Attaf highlighted that resorting to military intervention in Niger would have grave consequences for both the nation itself and the wider region.

"We firmly oppose the use of force as a means to resolve the crisis in Niger and stand ready to contribute to its peaceful resolution," Al Jazeera TV quoted the minister as stating. He underlined, "Any military intervention in Niger would lead to severe repercussions not only for Niger but also for the entire region."

Algeria shares a significant land border of over 950 kilometers with Niger.

In late July, a group of military officers from Niger's presidential guard staged a mutiny, declaring the removal of President Mohamed Bazoum. The National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland, led by Guard Commander Abdourahamane Tchiani, assumed control of the country. Member countries of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) swiftly imposed stringent sanctions on the mutineers, demanding the release of Bazoum and warning of potential military action.

ECOWAS Commissioner for Politics, Peace, and Security Abdel Fatau Musah had earlier indicated that the precise commencement date of the military intervention in Niger had been determined, although it had not been officially announced.
