The international community must compel Israel to halt its genocidal war in the Gaza Strip, Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf stated during his participation in the 79th session of the UN General Assembly in New York, according to Algerian radio.
He highlighted the "numerous crises, disputes, and conflicts facing the UN and the Security Council, which reflect a tense, exceptional, and unprecedented situation." Attaf emphasized that "one of the key tasks for the international community today is to force the Israeli colonial occupier to stop the genocidal war it has been waging for almost a year against the Palestinian people in Gaza and to put an end to Israel's multi-level escalation in the Middle East."
As a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, Algeria is paying close attention to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The North African nation has repeatedly condemned Israel's military actions in Gaza and expressed solidarity with the Palestinian people. In addition, Algeria is involved in providing food aid to the people of Gaza.
The situation in the Middle East escalated sharply after October 7, 2023, when armed supporters of the Palestinian militant group Hamas infiltrated Israeli territory from Gaza, killing residents of border communities and taking more than 240 hostages. In response, Israel launched a military operation in Gaza aimed at dismantling Hamas's military and political structures and rescuing all the hostages. The fighting in Gaza continues to this day.
According to official data from Gaza's Ministry of Health, the death toll from Israeli military actions in the enclave has surpassed 41,000 since the beginning of October, with the majority being women and children.
