Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune on Monday wrote a letter to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres calling on the international community to provide the necessary protection for Palestinian civilians and their holy sites in accordance with international law, the Algeria Press Service news agency reported.
The letter comes days after Israeli security forces used force against Palestinians at the Al-Aqsa Mosque in East Jerusalem.
"The attacks by the Israeli occupation forces on the holy Al-Aqsa Mosque and the violence they use against helpless worshippers are yet another reminder of the systematic violations of human rights and fundamental freedoms," Tebboune said in the letter.
"These grave events, occurring in a tense international environment, increase instability in the Middle East region and further undermine the prospects for a just and final settlement of the Palestinian question. These actions, repeated every year during the holy month of Ramadan, are indicative of the occupier's repression of Palestinian civilians, who are respected for their resistance and sacrifice," the Algerian leader stressed.
"The deterioration of the situation obliges the international community to take full responsibility and, through the mediation of the UN, in particular the Security Council, to act urgently to provide the necessary protection for Palestinian civilians and their holy places in accordance with international law," Tebboune pointed out.
Al-Aqsa Mosque Imam Sheikh Akram Sabri said that the clashes on the Temple Mount on April 15 were caused by a provocation by Jewish settlers. According to WAFA news agency, 153 Arabs needed medical help after the Israeli military and police used special means, while 250 people were injured. At least eight Israelis were wounded.
