07 April 2022

The trilateral meeting of Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and EU President Charles Michel ended in Brussels. The sides instructed the foreign ministers to start preparations for negotiations on a peace treaty, the press service of the Armenian cabinet said Thursday.

"A trilateral meeting between Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, European Council President Charles Michel and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev was held in Brussels. The Armenian prime minister and Azerbaijani president instructed the foreign ministers to begin preparations for peace talks between the two countries," the report said.

"Following the meeting, an agreement was reached that a bilateral commission on delimitation of the Armenian-Azerbaijani border will be established by the end of April, authorized to also ensure security and stability along the border," the press service of the cabinet said.

During the meeting, Pashinyan touched upon the situation in Nagorno-Karabakh and humanitarian problems caused by the recent actions of Azerbaijani armed forces units.

Issues related to trilateral statements of November 9, 2020, January 11, 2021, and November 26, 2021, as well as implementation of agreements reached during the trilateral meeting in Brussels on December 14 were discussed.

On March 26, the Russian defense ministry said that Azerbaijani troops entered the zone of responsibility of the Russian peacekeeping contingent in Nagorno-Karabakh. The next day, the Russian defense ministry said that Azerbaijan withdrew its troops from the village of Parukh (the Azerbaijani name for it is Farukh) of Nagorno-Karabakh.

The situation around Nagorno-Karabakh escalated on September 27, 2020, when active hostilities broke out there. On November 9 of the same year, a trilateral statement was signed by Russian President Vladimir Putin, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, which achieved the cessation of hostilities in the conflict zone. The Azerbaijani and Armenian sides halted their positions, a number of areas came under Baku's control, and Russian peacekeepers were deployed along the line of contact and the Lachin corridor.
