Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev at a meeting with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in Sochi expressed condolences to the Russian side in connection with the tragedy in the Kemerovo region.
"I would like to personally express my condolences to you in connection with the tragedy that occurred at the Kemerovo region mine. Unfortunately, many people died. I sent a telegram yesterday, today I would like to express the condolences of the Azerbaijani people to you personally and the entire Russian people," Aliyev said.
On November 25, there was smoke in the morning at Listvyazhnaya mine in Belovo, Kemerovo region, and 285 people were underground. Most of them managed to get out, the rescuers went to get the rest, but after a while they were recalled because of the threat of explosion. The cause of the accident, according to preliminary data, was a methane explosion.
Now 51 people are declared dead: 46 miners and five rescuers. Fifty people were hospitalized: 38 miners and 12 rescuers. Criminal cases were opened for violations of industrial safety and negligence, the mine director, his first deputy and head of the site were detained, as well as two inspectors of Rostekhnadzor.
