Azerbaijan is set for a long-term peace with Armenia, President Ilham Aliyev said on Thursday at a meeting with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin on the margins of the Summit of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence-Building Measures in Asia, held in Astana.
"At every meeting we do not ignore the issues in our region, security issues, achieving peace in the region. Today we will also talk about that. We are committed to long-term peace, and for our part, we believe that we have proposed quite constructive theses in order for peace to finally be achieved," Aliyev said.
"We are very happy with the way the relations between our countries are developing, they have reached the highest level - the level of allied interaction. We are very actively moving forward on many issues," Aliyev said.
In March this year, Baku handed over to Yerevan proposals containing five basic principles of normalization of relations between the two countries. They include mutual recognition of each other's sovereignty, territorial integrity, inviolability of borders and political independence, confirmation of the absence of territorial claims against each other and commitments not to present such claims in the future, rejection of threats of force. Proposals also include the delimitation and demarcation of borders and the establishment of diplomatic relations, the opening of transport and other communications, and cooperation in other areas of mutual interest.
