Arab countries remain neutral in the Russian-Ukrainian crisis, Assistant Secretary-General of the Arab League (LAS) Husam Zaki said on the air of the Egyptian TV channel OnTV on Monday evening.

"Arab countries have friendly relations with both Ukraine and Russia," he said. - "And it's hard for friends to see the two of them at war with each other, so the LAS has taken a position of neutrality."

An emergency meeting of the regional community's permanent representatives was held Monday at the initiative of Cairo. "The League is not going to take sides," said an Egyptian diplomat. - "We want to help more than blame or condemn. We are also trying to agree on positions to help Arab communities in Ukraine." He explained that not all Arab states are represented diplomatically in Kiev, so they cannot support their diasporas. "And we encourage Arabs to help each other," Zaki added.

At the meeting at LAS headquarters, the representatives expressed concern about the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Ukraine and said they were ready to form a special contact group at the ministerial level to help resolve the conflict diplomatically. The League called on all parties concerned to resolve the current situation in Ukraine through dialogue and diplomacy "in such a way as to ensure the safety of the peoples living in this one of the most important regions of the world".
