The Arab League condemns violence from both sides of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict and strongly advocates for an immediate ceasefire. Arab Leauge Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit expressed this stance during discussions with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.
"We strongly condemne violence, and it's crucial to emphasize that this condemnation applies to both sides of the conflict," Aboul Gheit emphasized. He highlighted the distressing statistics of the past six months, revealing that "between three and five Palestinians per day have lost their lives due to actions by the Israeli military in the West Bank." Additionally, he pointed out the ongoing "provocations by Israeli settlers against Palestinians, particularly in sites of religious significance to them."
The LAS secretary-general also emphasized his full agreement with Lavrov on the "importance and necessity of achieving an immediate ceasefire" between Israelis and Palestinians.
On the morning of October 7, rocket attacks were launched from the Gaza Strip into Israel, coinciding with militant incursions into the Jewish state. The Israeli military responded swiftly, declaring a "state of readiness for war" and initiating Operation Iron Swords in retaliation. Hamas politburo chief Ismail Haniyeh framed this Palestinian action as a response to Israeli aggression against the Al-Aqsa Mosque in central Jerusalem. Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Galant authorized the mobilization of reservists and implemented a "special security state" throughout Israel.
As per the latest reports, the conflict has resulted in over 500 Palestinian casualties and more than 2,700 injuries, while in Israel, over 700 individuals have lost their lives, and over 2,300 have been injured.
